It’s natural to balk a little at the image of models posing amidst gravestones and – in this case – imposing stone mausoleums. Maybe there’s an irreverence to it, an impiety; to tread foot where the dead lie buried, especially for a cause as flippant as fashion.
Let’s face it though: it’s not about disturbing the peace of the Sleepers, who are truly too far under to stir. It’s the living who take offence. And so it’s your perspective on death that determines your view on art in life, in situations where the latter is set amoungst the former. As Steve Jobs once remarked, death is very likely the single best invention of life. Accept it for what it is, and perhaps the irreverence melts away.
