Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Seoul for the first time with Michael Kors for their Fall 17 press day. It was an amazing opportunity to get to explore a new city, meet some new people and of course have a play with some pieces from their gorgeous collections. You can see a little preview of what was on offer at their press event, from their new handbag style the Bancroft, to those runway looks I was fawning over after the NYC show in February, and some fun footwear and eyewear.
I was so excited to take in the culture, see some sights, go shopping and eat my way around Seoul. Lucky for me, the MK team had organised some pretty special meals and activities around the event, making for an incredible few days. Here are some of my favourite places to shop, eat and hang out.
– Stay –
With incredible views over the city, an impressive outdoor pool situation, and a buffet breakfast to rival most, Shilla Hotel is the place to be. I loved how close the hotel was to everything, while still feeling very private and secluded.
– Eat –
Located on Namsan Mountain, Poom is a restaurant serving traditional Korean cuisine with a modern twist. The view from their outdoor area makes for a pretty spectacular golden hour, and once in the restaurant, you can watch the sunset in style while you eat. This is where Michael Kors hosted their welcome dinner, the table setup and the food were so beautiful!
Parc is a cute little home-style restaurant tucked away in Itaewon. With a fresh herb and vegetable garden outside, it’s common to see the chefs darting from the kitchen to pick fresh garnishes for your meal. The menu consists of traditional Korean dishes, the recipes of which have been passed down by the owner’s mother.
Craving a cruffin? Never fear, because Mr Holmes Bakehouse (all the way from San Francisco) has got you covered. Offering a variety of insta-friendly baked goods, alongside coffee and those neon signs you might have seen all over the internet, it’s the place to be in Garosugil.
It wouldn’t be experiencing Koren cuisine without trying Korean BBQ! Maple Tree House was the destination for our last dinner in Seoul, and it was worth the wait. There is something quite thrilling about seeing your food get cooked in front of you (patience is a virtue here guys!), and I love the variety of side dishes that adorned the table.
– Shop –
Located in Sinsa-dong, Garosugil is a particularly cool shopping strip with a somewhat European feel in the middle of Seoul. The main street is lined with ginkgo trees and makes for a pretty perfect photo op (I spotted a few photo shoots taking place during my visit). There is everything from big name high-street stores like Zara, Mango and H&M, alongside designer favourites (I love the Michael Kors store here) and a variety of smaller boutiques and vintage stores. If you tire yourself out, stop for an iced latte at any of the cute cafes.
Meanwhile, in Jung-gu, it’s all happening at Myeong-dong. This is pretty much the main shopping district, and you’ll be able to find almost everything imaginable. The main drawcard? Skincare & cosmetics – perfect if you’re planning on stocking up on sheet masks. My personal highlight was the Style Nanda Pink Hotel, a narrow store over a few levels which has been styled like a fun (and oh so pink) boutique hotel, complete with a cafe and rooftop terrace.
If a pop-up style setup is more your thing, dedicate an hour to walking around Common Ground, a shopping and food market made from shipping containers. Get an ice cream, buy some slogan t-shirts, and don’t leave without snapping a pic in front of that blue wall.
– See –
Take in a soaring view of the city from Seoul Sky Observatory, a tower offering 360 degree views with ceiling to floor windows and transparent floors.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza is an art, design and culture hub in Dongdaemun, designed by Zaha Hadid. Worth a visit for the incredible architecture alone, but if time is on your side, be sure to catch an exhibition too.
Hope you enjoy!
