The forgotten bits and pieces you find from a previous trip while packing for the next are surely the real memories. Not the superficial gifts and purchases with no real geographical nor cultural significance. Not even your own clothes – that is to say, you won’t be putting on that jacket and thinking, “Oh wasn’t that night wearing this jacket in Paris great fun?”.
For me, it’s the gems hidden away in side-pockets that really reflect the trip. Indeed, I just came across this mess of New Year’s Eve memories from New York while frantically packing for my flight to LA in the morning. I wouldn’t mind rewinding to dressing up for the Soho Grand‘s masquerade ball with Alex, counting down for midnight and the balloons that didn’t rain down, and ordering 1 AM grilled cheese room service (the best grilled cheese room service).
Meanwhile, I’m sitting here in May with a hundred thousand deadlines, and prospective jetlag.
